Not only is Portsmouth a fantastic base to visit the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, but it's also 200 years since Charles Dickens was born. The great author was born in a modest house in Portsmouth in 1812 and this year the city is hosting a range of events to celebrate. Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, will also be housed in a brand new museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard from late 2012. Portsmouth is packed with places to visit. Visit the 170m tall Spinnaker Tower offering spectacular views from one of three viewing platforms then the nearby famous Portsmouth Historic Dockyard where you can discover 800 years of naval history at HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860, The Mary Rose Museum, the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Action Stations. Head out to Southsea for even more delights, including Blue Reef Aquarium, Southsea Castle, the D-Day Museum, Royal Marines Museum and miles of seafront to explore. The creator of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle, worked in Portsmouth as a doctor in the city while writing classic tales such as A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. The city was chosen by Richard Lancelyn Green as the home for his extraordinary collection of Conan Doyle-related books, papers and assorted Sherlock Holmes memorabilia. You can visit the current exhibition 'A Study in Sherlock' at the City Museum for free. 2012 sees the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in Portsmouth and there will be a series of events throughout the year to celebrate. Visitors can learn more about the celebrated author of Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and many other novels by visiting Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum. This small house in the heart of the city is where the great author's life started and is a fascinating look into his humble beginnings. The 'A Tale of One City' exhibition at the City Museum runs until 4th November and explores Portsmouth during Dickens time.
